  • These include two of his One Year Performances made between 1980-2, one of which involved him clocking in to a mechanical worker’s clock every hour on the hour (and being photographed at the same time) for an entire year, while in the other Hsieh tested the limits of human existence even further by living for an entire year outdoors in New York without taking shelter of any kind. Taiwan’s pavilion has found a home in the atmospheric setting of a former 17 th century prison adjacent to the Bridge of Sighs where veteran performance artist Tehching Hsieh is showing meticulously compiled photographs and documentation of his often-gruelling live works. Other National PavilionsĮach Biennale sees more and more national representations finding impromptu locations beyond the Giardini and throughout the city – and its here that some of the most interesting work can be seen, and in some of the most unusual locations. In the Giardini’s Central Pavilion, look out for a gloriously dream-like animation with a rabbit-dog hyrid hero by young New York artist-of-the moment Rachel Rose and also Russian-Dagestani artist Taus Makhacheva’s mesmerising film in which a tightrope walker carries paintings from the national collection of her homeland across a wire that stretches between two mountains.

    Also striking are the playfully sexy embroidered robes and linear erotic drawings by little-known (to me at least) Lebanese artist Huguette Caland, the perkily sexy minimalist relief-paintings of Zilia Sanchez from Cuba, and the flattened latex garments of the late Swiss artist Heidi Bucher.
