To do that you add a drum rack to a track, drop a sample you want to chop into a pad slot, set your start and end points manually, and duplicate the pad into another slot (option/alt + drag to new slot) and redo the start and end points for that pad until you fill the drum rack with the chops you need. The ideal sample chopping workflows in Ableton account for a variety of sounds within a sample, and distribute the slices across multiple drum pad slots in the drum rack, that's what the slice to drum rack feature does automatically in Standard and above depending on the settings you choose.įilled drum rack slots are like chains in instrument racks, they are basically sub tracks, or tracks within a track, not sure if they count against the track limit in Lite, try it out. It's most useful for samples that don't have a big variety in sound and would appear on the same track with the same settings. It happened pretty fast, within the first few months of using Ableton to record my guitar practices.ĮDIT: I used my college ID to get the educational pricing on Live 10 Standard that helped facilitate the upgrade.Īuto slicing in Simpler would still work, but it's a different thing because you only slice one instance of the sample. I didn't want to deal with constantly mixing down and exporting tracks, so I upgraded to Live 10 Standard once I started hitting the 8-track limitation repeatedly. The limitation with this method is that you've 'frozen' your work in that exported mix-down you can't go back and change effects or other settings on the fly to the individual instruments. Export those 6 tracks to a single WAV file, and re-import into your ableton project. With Lite, you can only add 2 more instruments. So if you're willing to bounce tracks a lot, you can get around this limitation.įor example, let's say you use 6 tracks to make a beat or a drum track with bass. You can do anything within the constraints of 8 tracks. The main limitation of Live Lite is 8 tracks.
